COVID-19 cases in treatment overtake recoveries in Vietnam for first time since April

Twenty cases traced to the outbreak epicenter in central Da Nang City and one case imported from the U.S. were recorded on Saturday night, the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control announced.

The 20 local infections include 15 in Da Nang, two in Quang Nam Province, two in Bac Giang Province and one in Khanh Hoa Province.

The imported patient is a 17-year-old man with a permanent address in Ho Chi Minh City who arrived in Hanoi from the U.S. on August 6 and was quarantined immediately after arrival at Noi Bai International Airport in the capital.

He is being treated at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Dong Anh District, Hanoi.

On Saturday morning, Vietnam documented five cases including three traced to the Da Nang outbreak and two imported cases from Mexico.

As of 6:00 pm Saturday, the Southeast Asian country has logged a total of 810 COVID-19 cases, including 317 imported patients.

The number of local infections traced to Da Nang has amounted to 353 since July 25, when the central city documented Vietnam’s first community-based case after 99 days.

A total of 405 COVID-19 patients in Vietnam are in treatment, including 40 having tested negative for the coronavirus at least once.

Meanwhile, 395 cases have been cleared of the virus and ten COVID-19 patients, all with severe underlying conditions, have died in the country since the pandemic first hit in January.

Saturday marked the first time the number of active COVID-19 cases has overtaken the number of recoveries in Vietnam in four months.

Recoveries have consistently accounted for more than half of COVID-19 cases in the Southeast Asian country since April 8.
